It is a pleasant surprise to find a decent pub with good food at a reasonable price. We first returned to the Spot eight months ago after several years absence when it was reopened under new management as a Steak House. All food is cooked to order so there may be a delay. This is as-and-when-you-want-it, cooked to your liking, not "From the Freezer Fast Food". The staff are very welcoming and friendly and this has become a regular with family and friends. Well worth the run out.

Regularly visit the Spotted Dog for a family meal and would highly recommend it! Lovely spot near pleasant walk along the River Tees. The food is fresh and well cooked and something for everyone. Their steaks are my favourite and cooked to perfection, hubby and kids love the sausage and exceptional mash or crispy battered fish and real chunky chips. Great offers on and full price menu doesnt break the bank. Friendly atmosphere and personal service, always make us feel at home. Theres a lovely snug with real fire too. An inexpensive treat. (they do fab cocktails too ;))

since new management took over we decided to try the spotted dog again, and we were extremely impressed. we have been many times now, and the steaks are the best steaks we've had in ages, high quality meat and for a very reasonable price. all the meals are fresh and of high quality, and sunday lunch is great. the management and staff are very friendly and polite - will be returning very soon (tomorrow)!

advertised outside and inside that there is a two meals for £12 offer available Tuesday to Saturday all day. We have been three times for this offer now, the first time we were told that they only took bookings (even though the pub was empty) so they turned us away. Second time we wanted the roast dinner but we were told that there wasnt any left, then to or surprise the couple sat next to us managed to order two roast dinners after us?? Third time we were told that they now stop serving all day food between 3pm & 5pm! So with it being 4:20pm we decided to wait and get a drink = two fresh orange juices however this turned out to be pineapple juice. As the place was empty we decided to leave as it was that depressing. The staff even got the hoover out and were hoovering around us. There was a nasty smell about the place too so we didnt fancy staying to eat. Shame really as the menu looked really good.

Having driven past this previously, we were looking forward to the opportunity to lunch there. The painted sign 'gastropub' should have sounded alarm bells, but it didn't. The pub also advertises cask ales - these were not available - beers on offer were John Smiths or Trophy - keg. I asked for fresh orange juice and instead was given squash. There was no range of red wine on offer - only large or small :) Basically, the meals proferred were inedible. My husband's steak sandwich smelled slightly odd, and the accompanying stilton sauce had a marked lack of stilton. The black pudding on crostini topped with goats cheese, was a tad overwhelmed by the dried out ciabatta it was served on - minus the goats cheese, because they had run out. The place has huge potential, if customer service, attention to detail and edible food could be addressed. We will not be returning.

This place has been my regular for a few years.I am now retired but was in business where entertaining was pretty high on the agenda.Consequently over a period of 20 years I have been to a lot of pubs/eateries etc in the UK. I truly find Simon the landlord one of the nicest chaps I have ever met and he and all his staff make it a pleasure to be in the pub be it for drinks or food or both. I read one of the previous comments with shock as the impression given was of a take it or leave it attitude.Nothing could be further from the truth. Keep up the good work Simon & Staff.............you are an oasis in the Darlington area for friendliness and the true pleasure of being in a decent pub is pretty unique in my experience.

I visit the spotted dog regularly, at least twice a week and find the food and service to be fantastic. I regularly eat off the two meals for £10 and the a'la carte menu and have never been dissapointed the food quality is fantastic and the service second to none. Not sure what some people expect but i am sure the staff at the spotted dog would always go out of there way to make you feel welcome and accommadated. I have food allergies and the staff always accommadate my needs in everyway, i understand that its not possible to stock every food item that accommadates everyone all of the time, but they always manage for me.

Unfortunately we were very dissappointed when we visited and the price of the drinks brought the value for money down to a 1 star! We opted for the two for £10 menu, my husband had the liver and bacon with mash which was lovely. However I decided on the Gammon and Pineapple, being on a diet, I asked for it to be served with jacket potato (they had none) or salad (ditto) Homemade chips or new potatoes was the option. The gammon itself was nice but the chips tasted as if they had been fried in dirty oil! We were going to have a dessert but were so dissappointed with the meal that we decided against it and paid the bill - this is where my gripe comes from - my husband had a diet coke (which was a mixer size bottle) and I had a lime and soda, the cost for the drinks was £3.66. I was stunned! We have driven past this pub hundreds of times and often thought about going in, this was the first and last time we ever will.
